Smaller & Independent
Boutique food festivals, indie music, county shows and artisan markets. The good stuff that's not ninety thousand people in a muddy field.
Small enough that you won't need a ladder to see the stage.
A proper artisan food festival in the grounds of a 14th-century castle. Cookery theatre, local produce, street food stalls, real ale tent. Yorkshire producers, cheese, charcuterie, baked goods. The main stage has live music in the evening. Day tickets around £15-20. It's a very civilised day out — no camping, no wellies required. Perfect if you're staying anywhere in the north.
The Levellers' own indie music festival. Sold out in April — four months in advance — which tells you everything about how good it is. 6 stages, no corporate sponsors, no advertising. Just properly curated alternative music. 2026 lineup: Super Furry Animals (reunion), Madness, The Proclaimers, The Divine Comedy, Skindred, Gogol Bordello, The Wonder Stuff. The Sunday theme is "Back to the 70's." Real ale from Otter Brewery, craft stalls, children's area, walkabout theatre. The most loved small festival in the UK. If you can find resale tickets, go.
Listed here because while it's 20,000+ people, it's still fundamentally indie in spirit. The UK's best-curated festival for folk, psychedelia and alternative music. Previous headliners: PJ Harvey, Underworld, Fontaines D.C., King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. Four science stages, comedy, spoken word, folk sessions, natural wine bars, artisan food from across Wales and the southwest. Weekend tickets £245 including camping. If you've never been, it's genuinely special. If your trip is in Wales, this is the obvious collision.
If anyone arrives early or extends the trip.
Europe's largest balloon festival. Over 100 hot air balloons launching at dawn and dusk against the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Nightglow events where balloons light up in time to music. Street food village, fairground, live music on the main stage. Completely free entry. One of the most spectacular sights in the UK calendar. Bring a blanket and watch from the hillside.
Europe's biggest vegan camping festival. Music, activists talks, yoga workshops, food stalls and a completely vegan bar. Not just for vegans — the food is genuinely excellent and the music lineup is strong. Family-friendly. Weekend camping ticket. If you want a weekend of guilt-free eating and surprisingly good bands, this is it.
A weekend celebrating BBQ, live-fire cooking and smoked food. Pitmasters from across the UK. BBQ competitions, live music, craft beer, street food. In Maldon on the Essex coast. Small, focused, very much about the food rather than the spectacle.
Since 1983. Garlic beer, garlic ice cream, garlic fudge. Circus acts, cookery demos, live music. Camping available on-site. You'd need the ferry from Portsmouth or Southampton. The third weekend of August every year. About £10-15.
Traditional agricultural show — livestock, vintage tractors, show jumping, dog shows, craft stalls and a massive food tent. Real ale bar, local cheese, cider. It is everything wholesome and English. One day only. Cheap tickets.
If anyone stays on through the Bank Holiday.
Jamie Oliver and Blur bassist Alex James's farm festival. Food demos from top chefs, artisan food stalls, live music, cooking classes, children's activities. In the Cotswolds countryside. Family-friendly but the food is seriously good — previous chefs include Raymond Blanc and Tom Kerridge. Weekend tickets from £180 including camping. Smaller than the mega-festivals, very much about the food.
Four days of free food festival at Bolton Market. Live cookery theatre with TV chefs, artisan market stalls, street food, real ale, live music. Free entry. One of the largest free food festivals in the North. Very local, very friendly.
Free weekend-long festival celebrating Italian food, drink and culture in Cathedral Gardens. Street food from Manchester's Italian delis and restaurants, Aperol spritz bar, live music. From 12pm to 11pm. No tickets needed. Just turn up.
Listed again here because while it's enormous, it's completely free and entirely about community, culture and street-level celebration. Sunday (Family Day) is more relaxed with floats, steel bands and sound systems. Monday is the massive parade. The greatest free event in Britain.
Worth knowing about if anyone extends.
The UK's original live-fire BBQ festival. World-class chefs, butchers, pitmasters and fire fiends serving dishes over nothing but wood and charcoal. At Tobacco Dock in East London. Individual session tickets. Not a festival in the camping sense — it's a series of long lunches and dinners. If your trip is London-based and anyone stays through the following weekend, this is extraordinary. Brought to the UK from New York by the late Josh Ozersky in 2013.
One of the UK's oldest and most respected food festivals. Ludlow is a gorgeous medieval town and the festival takes over the castle grounds. 150+ food and drink producers from Shropshire and the Welsh Marches. Real ale, cider, local cheeses, charcuterie. The town has more Michelin-starred restaurants per capita than anywhere outside London. A proper foodie's weekend.
The beating heart of the Welsh food scene. World-class chefs, local producers, and the "incomparable spirit of Cymru." Historic market town in the Brecon Beacons National Park. Autumnal, atmospheric, very Welsh. Weekend tickets around £25.
